The DALEY News
(March & April. 2010)
General Information
Comrades, the basic philosophy of the VFW is to support veterans and the community. This year the activities have become fewer due to the fact that there are not enough of our members volunteering to help. Of the 300 members, the work is done by 10 or 12 faithful members who are being burned out.
Every veteran is entitled to a military funeral but Color Guard Commander Joe Driscoll, at times, cannot muster 5 people to do these honors. Consider giving of yourself to honor our fellow veterans who richly deserve this tribute.
In May, along with Memorial Day activities, there will be the annual poppy distribution. The money collected goes directly to help our fellow veterans. The more people means more money collected so when the time comes give us an hour of your time. More information on this will be in the next newsletter.
Bingo is the biggest source of income supporting all the other programs that the Post sponsors. The same few people work each week, and some for years, and are in dire need of assistance. Help is needed to sell the game sheets at the beginning, sell the lucky seven pull tab tickets, and call back winners (game monitors). At present there are two game callers and one spare but at least one more spare could be used. Bingo brings in approximately $1200 a month and without this our programs would drastically suffer. Bingo is smoke free. If we lose our faithful workers without replacements, we might just lose bingo.
We could use people to put on a breakfast, lunch or dinner; set up a pool tournament or a card tournament, an evening activity, a trip, a group to work at the community kitchen, visits to the Tilton Veterans Home, visits to the Veterans Hospitals, etc.
The Post, in reality, is not just a bar but without more comrades stepping up to help it might just become that. Just call the Post, 357- 0149, after 3pm and leave a message. Someone will get back to you. In case one is worried, volunteering does not commit you for life.
The sprinkler system is all hooked up, inspected, approved, and connected to Mutual Aid. All this at a cost of about $50,000 was completely paid for out of the building fund from the proceeds of the Saturday Bar Bonus Games.
Mark your calendars for the Corn Beef and Cabbage Luncheon to be held on March 17th. All information is in the Upcoming Events Section.
Voice of Democracy (VOD)
Evan West of Keene High School who was the Post 799 and District 5 VOD winner went on to become the State Winner. He received a $1500 award from the State VFW and $275 from the State Ladies Auxiliary. He also will attend the National VOD event to be held in Washington, DC where he will complete for national scholarships of up to $30,000. Evan will also attend a Leadership Seminar at Valley Forge, PA. Post 799 and Keene High School should be proud for this is the second year in a row that we have had the State winner.
Membership Dues
The Post is 26 members shy of 100% and there are 24 members who have still not sent in their 2010 payment. There is still a chance we could get our 100%. If for some reason you are unable to afford the dues but want to remain a member of the VFW, contact the Quartermaster at 357-0149 and arrangements will be made. Remember, if you are 80 years young or on active duty, the Post pays your dues.
Newsletter by e-mail
If anyone would like to receive their Newsletter by e-mail this could be arranged and would save the Post money on postage. Also, the Newsletter is available on the Post Web Site, www.vfw799.org .
