Keene Daley Whipple Post #799 Ladies Auxiliary News May -June 2010
My Dear Sisters,
A new slate of officers was elected for 2010-2011 during the April meeting. Congratulations to all of them, and best wishes for a successful year! Thanks to those who served in offices this year; their cheerful contributions of time and effort made all of our duties more enjoyable, and enabled the Auxiliary to fulfill its mission. Please also welcome our newest sister, Deborah Seymour, who was initiated in April.
You may recall my report on the effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder on veterans’ marital and family life in the Sept-Oct 2009 newsletter, along with the Auxiliary’s decision to fund group counseling for local spouses whose loved ones suffer from the disorder. At the April meeting, Monadnock Family Services Veterans Counselor A.J. Paige visited us to report on the results of the sessions, and to request our support for another series to benefit more of these families. Along with AJ, three women who participated in the group counseling spoke of how the service had benefited her and her husband’s marital relationship. All expressed gratitude for our support and stressed that the counseling had been of great value to them and to their veterans. One went so far as to emphasize that without the insights and coping skills she gained from these sessions, she doubted that she and her husband would still be together.
I am proud to announce that the Auxiliary voted to fund another series of counseling sessions to benefit ten more veteran families. Of course, this is an expensive undertaking that we must fundraise to meet. I am confident that all of you recognize the worth of our mission in aiding veteran families and will do what you are able to help. The Auxiliary yard sale, to be held on Saturday June 12, will be an important fundraiser for this project. We need donated items to sell and volunteers for the day of the sale. If you have available space for storage until the sale, we would be most grateful for that as well. We will also have a bake sale table. If you are or know of a crafter who might like to rent table space, please spread the word! Contact me at 352-4046 with any assistance you can offer.
It is also that time of year to help with the Buddy Poppy Drive, to be held on Friday May 29 and Saturday May 30. It is more important than ever to have as many volunteers to fill as many hours/locations as possible. Due to the Wal-Mart Corporation’s recent decision “for liability reasons” to disallow nonprofits to fundraise on any of their properties, we no longer may post volunteers at any Riverside Plaza business, our most productive location. Other corporations that have recently moved into our community are following suite. Conrad Perreault has been able to secure the following locations: the State Liquor Store, J.C. Penney, Achilles Agway, and the Court Street 7-Eleven. The money collected from the drive goes into the Post and Auxiliary Relief Funds for direct aid to our brothers and sisters in need. Please sign up at the Post or mail in the form at the bottom of the newsletter.
Post 799 is again offering two $1500 college scholarships, one to a Keene High School senior and another to a Monadnock Regional High School senior. Applications are available at each High School Guidance office. Preference will be given to someone who has a family member who is on active duty or a veteran. Please remind your friends and family members to apply.
We recently shipped care packages to three active service members in combat areas.
Memorial flags will be placed at gravesites of deceased Auxiliary sisters and flowers will be planted for Gold Star Mothers. Volunteers are needed. Please contact Chaplain Jackie Hull at 352-2812 for details.
Thank you and God bless.
Loyally yours,
Gloria Ruff
